Thanks to the boom in new technology, today's students own more expensive consumer goods per head than the rest of the population. Many students now consider such things as mobile phones, iPods, digital cameras and DVD players to be essential possessions away from home.

According to Churchill Insurance, students in the UK collectively took possessions worth a total of £2.5bn with them to university last year. Students' average insurance claim was £852 and the kit in a student room was worth an average of £3,000. A recent survey by specialist student insurer Endsleigh suggested this figure could be even higher, at over £4,200.

So what are the insurance options? You should first check whether you have cover under your parents' home insurance policy. For example, Churchill allows possessions worth up to £4,000 to be taken away from the family home to student accommodation.

Home loan scheme criteria expanded

First home buyers will be able to borrow $200,000 without a deposit under the Government's Welcome Home Loan scheme, Housing Minister Chris Carter has announced.

He said the Government was widening the scheme to help first home buyers who could service a mortgage but had difficulty raising a deposit.

Mr Carter said the scheme as initially developed had helped 1800 households but because of rises in house prices now needed "a shot in the arm".

Under the initial criteria, home buyers were able to borrow $150,000 with no deposit but Mr Carter said that enabled access to only 11 per cent of total house sales.

Since the scheme was designed, houses in the lower quartile price had risen 55 per cent.

Increasing the amount people could borrow without having a deposit "should enable access to up to 22 per cent of national house sales without a deposit, and up to 50 pe rcent with a smaller deposit," Mr Carter said.
